The Future of White Court @ the Former Marian Court College

The public is invited to attend a discussion about the future of the historic White Court property, home of the former Marian Court College, on Wednesday, October 28, at 7:00pm in the Swampscott High School Auditorium.

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Northeast Community (owners of the property) and the Town Administrator and Town Planner have organized this planning workshop as a preliminary step to assist the Sisters. The Sisters are looking for the community’s input and guidance on the future reuse of this historic property.

White Court, familiar to most residents as home of the former Marian Court College, has a rich history as it relates to Swampscott. This summer estate was designed and built in 1895 by renowned architect Arthur Little of the Boston architectural firm Little and Browne, for the Frederick E. Smith family of Dayton, Ohio. Situated on six acres with a commanding view of the Atlantic Ocean, the 28-room mansion served as a summer White House for President Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s. In 1954, the property was sold to the Sisters of Mercy who renamed the house Marian Court. In 1964, it became a small secretarial school, eventually a junior college and a four-year college. Marian Court College closed this past June and is currently vacant. The Sisters have expressed their desire to “respect the architecture of the original home, the beautiful land and neighborhood, and at the same time look towards filling a need in your community of Swampscott.”

The public discussion will be moderated by Town Planner Pete Kane and will feature a presentation of potential concepts for reuse of the property that the Sisters have put together for the public to consider. The workshop will include a discussion between representatives from the Sisters of Mercy and representatives from the town’s Board of Selectmen, Planning Board, and Historical Commission. The public will also have an opportunity to submit questions and comments during this discussion.
